  • 9 Apps to Try This Weekend for Editing Photo & Video Content

Creating content for social media can be confusing and overwhelming. Fortunately, I've found a few apps that I reuse constantly to edit video and photos for social media. I'm going to break down a few for you to help make creating content A LOT easier! 1. Instasize This app is super helpful if your photo doesn't fit completely in an Instagram post. It also works really well when you're needing to add white space around the picture so that it fits better. For example, occasionally I'll find a great quote on Twitter and want to reshare that on my own page. If I take a screenshot and crop it, it won't be a perfect square, so I upload the screenshot to Instasize and I'm able to pinch the picture to make it smaller, and it automatically adds the white space around it. Example below: *Bonus Tip: This is how people repost their own quotes from Twitter over on other social media platforms. Post a quote as yourself on your Twitter feed, then screenshot and upload to Instasize to further build your brand over on another social media platform! 2. Lightroom This has to be one of my all time favorites. I love creating a cohesive style with my Instagram posts and this app makes that possible. This app allows you to import professional editing presets. If you're wondering what a "preset" is, "A Lightroom preset is a configuration of settings, designed to achieve a certain look or style of your photo." Once you find the preset that you like best, you can upload that preset to lightroom, then copy the settings of the preset and then paste those settings on your own photos and BAM, you've got a professionally edited photo in the color scheme you love. Below is a preview of before adding a preset and after. 3. Unfold This app allows you to upload your own photos and add text to create beautiful and engagement worth Instagram Story posts. I'll include a screenshot of some of the free templates I like to use! You'll see that the creative possibilities are endless! 4. WordSwag This app allows you to either create quotes or simply upload a photo and add your logo to it! The "add your logo" is a paid option, but is so helpful and absolutely worth the upgrade! If you want a detailed look at how to add a logo to your pictures using WordSwag, click here for a step by step guide. 5. InShot This app is my go to for creating videos. I've started playing with Instagram Reels and have seen a huge spike in my engagement and views. If you're not yet on reels, just go for it! Currently, Instagram is rewarding creators for creating reels by displaying their reel in the explore tab, which allows you to get a huge amount of views. If the algorithm decides to put your video in the explore page, chances are the views will spike. I'll include a screenshot below of a few recent videos I've posted. You'll see the two painting videos have over 10k views and one has less than 500 views. The one with less than 500 didn't get deemed to be in the explore page, so it didn't do as well... but think quality over quantity. Some videos will perform well and others won't, just focus on staying consistent and thinking - 'How will this video add value!' The videos that generally end up with the most views either made someone say, "Wow, I've got to send this to a friend!" or "Wow, I need to save this for later!" Obviously I could talk about this A LOT, so if you're interested in an entire blog post on video content strategy, shoot me an email and let me know. Below is an example of the number of views a reel can get. You'll see that some of mine are hits and some of them are not, this is completely normal, so if this happens to you, don't worry just keep creating. 6. Photoleap This app allows you to remove the background on a picture. And let me tell you, doing this in Photoshop isn't not the easiest thing if you're not very familiar with that program! Below is an example of a little photo I created of the cutest dog in the world... okay well, I'm pretty biased because she's mine ;) My boyfriend left his work shirt at my house one day, so I decided to put it on her like a costume. I saved a photo from Google Images of the building and added it to the background. A lot of people asked if I actually took a picture of her in front of the building, which cracked me up! If you really look closely you can see how it doesn't remove the background perfectly, but it makes for some fun and creative content. Bonus: If you need some cute puppy pictures, check out Milly over on Instagram here. 7. Canva This is my go to for small creative projects that I don't necessarily need to use Illustrator for. You can create business cards, posters, Instagram posts, Pinterest posts... the list goes on and on. If you're looking for more ways to show up professional and continue growing your brand's awareness, this is the app for you! For a more in depth look into this program and how to use it, click here! 8. Camera360 Okay full disclosure, this app is probably not the best for your mental health... but I'm including it because SOMETIMES I use it. You can upload a photo smooth out wrinkles, smooth skin, remove eye bags, and MUCH more. I don't have the paid version, but if I want to post a photo or video and smooth out my skin a bit, I use this! 9. Photo Editor This was the first app I ever used for editing pictures! I don't use it much anymore, but occasionally it comes in handy if I need to blur something out. If I take a photo to sell an item on Facebook marketplace, the blur effect comes in handy. For example, you could blur out your car's license plate number, a password or code, any personal information that you don't want to include in a public post. Whewwwww that was a lot! I don't recommend going and downloading all 9 of these, but just pick and choose the ones you need for the content you're working on now. This blog post will always be here to reference if you need to find the name of another one you didn't download right now. I'd love to hear if this was helpful for you and I can't wait to see what you create!

  • Website Checklist - 8 Things You Need to Get Started

When it comes to building a website, there’s a lot of content that you’ll need to gather before getting started. To avoid feeling too overwhelmed, I thought it would be helpful if I shared a website checklist to lay it all out for you. Whenever I connect with someone that wants me to design a website for them, there’s a few questions I start with. The answers to theses questions always vary, depending on the industry, but they really help to narrow down what content we will need to get started. Whether you’re hiring someone to build a website for you or you’re DIY-ing it yourself, these questions will help break it down so it’s not as overwhelming. *Click any of the topics below to be taken directly to that section. In this blog post I’ll be covering: Business Goals How your business goals relate to the strategy behind your website. Call to Action How to make it easier for people to take action. Logo/Branding How to make your brand easier for viewers to remember. Determining the Number of Pages How to determine how many pages you'll need. Payment Profile What you'll need if you want to take credit/debit card payments via your website. Communication (Email Maketing) How to improve communication with new visitors. About Me/Company Story Tips for writing your about me section or company story. Photos The importance in photography, plus where to find free uncopywritten pictures! If you’ve been wondering what you’ll need for your website, this list will help narrow it all down! 1. Business Goals The question I always start with is, “What’s your ultimate goal for your website?” This can seem like an obvious question, but the answer will determine the strategy behind the flow of your website. Whether your goal is booking clients, selling products, or simply educating your audience on what you do, narrowing down your ultimate goal will make sure your website is profitable. If you need a business coach to help narrow this down, I highly recommend Sue Mohr! 2. Call to Action Have you ever been to a website and been confused as to what the next step is? This is why your call to action is so important. I’ve always heard, “If you confuse, you’ll lose.” Let go of the idea that you need to be cute and clever and focus on being clear. If you’re wanting to sell products make sure you either have a few on your home page or you have a button that says, “Shop Now”. If you’re wanting people to book your service, include a “Book Now” button. This all seems so self explanatory, but it can easily be forgotten. Think of your website as your brick and mortar store and think of the call to action as the cash register. If you went into a store and couldn’t figure out where to make your purchase, you may just leave the store. To avoid confusion, make the next steps clear to ensure you don't miss out on the sale! 3. Branding To make your brand easier for people to remember, it starts with a great logo and branding. A logo, color palette, and the use of consistent fonts creates the visual representation of your brand. The feeling that people get after utilizing your products and or services will start to build your brand’s personality. To make your website easier for people to remember, make sure you have an updated logo, stay consistent in your colors, and don’t use too many different fonts. Some clients I work with already have their branding, so we build a site with that in mind. If they don’t, I create the branding for them before we begin the website build. This creates the foundation of their visual branding and makes creating future marketing material much easier. I've included my branding board as an example: 4. Determining How Many Pages You’ll Need Another question I love to ask is, “How many pages are you wanting?” This gets the wheels turning! Generally, most websites have a home page, about page, maybe a services or shop page, a contact page and possibly a frequently asked questions page. As you start brainstorming the number of pages, this will help you narrow down the type of content you’ll need. Maybe you want to have a blog to share things you’ve written, a menu page if you have a restaurant, or maybe a page that lists out some of the top products you’re wanting to sell. Start brainstorming the type of information you’ll want to share with people or that you’ll want them to find and I promise the ideas will just start flowing! 5. Payment Profile Documents Do you want to take payment on your website? This can be a big one. Most websites allow you to take payment via PayPal without the need to verify a lot of information. If you’re wanting to take payment via debit or credit card, you’ll need the following information: Legal Business Name EIN Company Registration Document (jpg, png, or pdf) Company Address (can be personal if you do business all online) Phone Number (can be personal if you don’t have a business line) Bank Statement (make sure the name on your business account matches your legal business name) Routing Number Account Number Account Manager and Business Owner Information First and Middle Name Last Name Date of Birth SSN or ITIN A Photo ID (license or passport works fine) Full Address 6. Communication Strategy There are so many ways to improve communication in your business. When it comes to improving communication on your website, email marketing is an AMAZING place to start. If you want to have the ability to send emails to potential clients/customers, the first thing I would recommend is a lead magnet. A lead magnet is a pop up that offers free information in exchange for an email address. Offering information that your target audience will benefit from is a great way to start growing your email list. Once you start collecting emails, you'll be able to send them information, sales, new announcements and special things before you release it on social media. Another way to improve communication would be to set up automated emails that people receive after filling out a form or purchasing a product. If they purchase something, an automated email can tell them how thankful you are for them as well as recommend other products they might like. If you have people reach out for more information, set up an automated email that lets them know when they can expect to hear back from you. This sets the expectation upfront and is a great thing to have set up in case you get an influx of reach outs. Using this strategy can assist in growth management in the months after the website has been built. Bonus: Facebook Groups are also a great way to build community as well as improve communication. Creating a Facebook Group for your clients and customers allows them to connect with each other, ask questions, and builds community. 7. About Me/Company Story When it comes to writing your story, position yourself as the guide and your customer as the hero. This isn’t a section to go in depth about your company’s history. This is a place to share why you love what you do and why you’re excited to help solve their problem. There’s nothing wrong with sharing your company’s history at the end, but begin this page by talking about why you’re so passionate about what you do and how you help your customers and clients! If you're looking for more guidance on this check out: How to Write the About Page for Your Website 8. Photos We’ve all heard the quote, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” This is so true, especially when it comes to your website. Having pictures of you working on your craft or you interacting with clients/customers helps them visualize what it would be like to work with you. I would highly recommend either hiring a photographer or DIY-ing your own product photography. Recently, I purchased a cheap phone holder with a bluetooth button that connects to my phone. This allows me to prop up my phone and use the clicker to take the photo. This is a great way to do it yourself, but if you have the budget to hire a photographer, do it! Having your own photos is amazing, but what if you just need a picture that helps you tell the story? I absolutely love using Unsplash. This website allows you to use uncopywritten photos on your site that will help you tell the story! My website is full of photos from Unsplash as well as pictures of me. A combination of both will help visitors get to know you and your brand and visually see what it is you can provide them! To break it down even more, I’ve come up with a quick list to reference as you start pulling everything together: Getting all this information together can be challenging! If it feels overwhelming, simply break this down into one item per day. The branding and payment profile documents can take longer, but focus on progress over perfection. Once this is all finished and the website is built, you're ready to fly!

  • How to Self Publish Your Book (from Jennifer Williams)

If you've been thinking about writing a book, but your intimidated by publishing, this blog post is for you. I've been working with Jennifer Williams who recently self published her book through Amazon. I told her I'd love to interview her and share her tips on self publishing for those who are interested in doing the same! Who is Jennifer Williams Jennifer Williams lives in a small-town south of Nashville with her husband of 30 years, their two sons, and a goofy dog. She enjoys the simple things in life like long walks, sweet tea, flowers, birdwatching, and date nights. She has a masters degree in psychology and has served in ministry for the last 25 years. She has a passion for writing and encouraging women to believe God's promises and to find quiet pauses with Jesus. She has been published in The Joyful Life Magazine, Proverbs 31Ministries/Compel Training's 40 Reminders God is in Control Devotional, ParentLife Magazine, and Faith and Family Values Magazine. She also writes regularly for her blog, aquietpause.com. Recently, Jennifer published her first book on Amazon: SHE believed: seven simple practices to build trust and overcome worry. Jennifer and I spent a lot of time over the last few weeks finishing up the tweaks on her book cover and artwork for promotion. I thought it would be fun to share a little about her experience with self-publishing. So, we sat down together to talk about it. What topics spark your interest to write about and why? My greatest passion for writing is sharing the truth of God’s word and encouraging others to believe His promises. I also like to write about ways to carve out quiet pauses in our busy lives, to strengthen relationships with the ones we love, and to find beauty in the little moments. I feel like these things are crucial for our spiritual and emotional health. Photo Credit: Unsplash For Someone Wanting to Write a Book Where Should They Start First? The first thing to do is simply write. Writers will never write a book until they first put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard. Writers should write from their hearts and experiences or from knowledge about a topic. The best writing comes from what is natural, not forced. It is also important to set deadlines. Many writers set a number of words to write per day or to finish a chapter by a certain date. I initially committed to write each chapter for a Bible study group that I was leading last fall. It forced me to write. Then, I set a timeline for finishing the book process. It spurred me on to completing my book. Photo Source: Unsplash Resources for Aspiring Writers Compel Training (Proverbs 31 Ministries) has been a valuable resource for me as a writer. For a small monthly fee, I get access to weekly training videos, Facebook writer groups, and many other resources that teach critical aspects of the writing process. The encouragement and writing opportunities offered by Compel Training are a huge plus for me, too! If that isn’t in the budget, there are so many resources available for free online. Photo Source: Unsplash How to stay consistent in writing? For so many years, I wrote as a hobby in my journals and on my blog…when I found the time. Being inconsistent and uncommitted, left me feeling very frustrated. I knew I was called to write, but it was always the last thing on my list after everything else was done. This year I decided to change that. After listening to so many writers discuss the importance of dedicated time to write, I took the plunge. I scheduled two mornings per week to write. If I found some extra time in the week, then great. If not, I knew I had those two mornings. A writer has to write. But, most of us can’t write full-time. So, I encourage writers to schedule at least one block of time (or more), for at least two hours each week to write. Get up early, stay up late, go to a coffee shop, skip the Sunday nap. Start small. Find the time. Photo Source: Unsplash What was your experience like, self-publishing? Fear was far worse than the experience. Isn’t that always the case? I literally dreaded the process of working through the self-publishing software on Amazon. And, it was absolutely the easiest step. The toughest part for me was editing the book and formatting it properly. Fortunately, Amazon provides a variety of book templates to get you started. Google was also my friend to figure out the weird formatting issues…like when a new chapter started on the wrong page. Amazon allows you to create a book cover or upload a book cover as well. I loved working with you, Abigail, to design my book cover and website. You really listened to my vision and the designs reflect it perfectly. Writers shouldn't be intimidated by the process. I am not very techy at all, so if I can figure out how to self-publish a book anyone can do it. If you had to do this all over again is there anything you would do differently? I would start sooner. I wouldn’t let fear keep me from pursuing my dream and calling. I would make writing a priority in my schedule. If you would like to check out Jennifer’s blog and new book, go to aquietpause.com.
